Bee Sting
-

My husband got stung by a bee last night and couldn't get the stinger out. His finger is all swollen and hurts. What can we use to draw the stinger out?

I know it can work with splinters if they are the least bit above the skin line...Elmers Glue. Wait for it to harden and peel it off with the stinger/splinter/cactus needle intact...most of the time.

Try ice to get the swelling down. If you can't just scrape it out with a fingernail, try using a tweezers. Make sure he doesn't have a reaction - but if it was last night, I'd say he probably won't by now. Even so, keep an eye out.

I'm so sorry I was slow to answer but I had no internet access for a bit. I hope everything turned out well for you. I have heard every kind of removal trick for the stinger of a bee. One thing you must be careful for is when someone attempts to remove it, they squeeze the sac, injecting more poison into the wound. Swelling around the injury makes it harder to remove it. Ice to reduce the swelling and cut the pain and to pay attention to any rashes, swelling of the mucus membrane (eyes, nose, mouth, tongue, throat). If this is the first time he was stung, usually nothing happens or a mild reaction happens but now his body has created antibodies and a second sting later in life can be more serious, even fatal. Epi-Pens are now available by prescription for a person to carry with them in case of a severe allergic reaction, where epinephrine is injected immediately for a lifesaving intervention. Any further questions, please don't hesitate to contact me. Thank you.
