BluRay wins... practically without firing a shot
-
Wednesday, February 20, 2008 6:44 PM
Hi all: Well, it's official... BluRay is the big winner in the high definition DVD marketplace. Toshiba promises support to existing owners of HD-DVD players... http://resmagonline.com/articles/publish/article_2405.shtml Send condolances and your class-action lawsuit paperwork to: Toshiba America, Inc. 1251 Avenue of the Americas Suite 4110 New York, NY 10020

What if you don't have any high def dvd's, just plain ones? What does this mean then?

They can be collectors items (or door stops) just like Betamax! This is what those people get for being impatient...That's the risk you run for being "The Joneses".

I think they have to support it for another 5-years. How well it’s supported who knows. The best was Circuit City and DIVX. They had to refund the overage of charges for the DIVX players. I am so happy to hear when that company is having a brush with bankruptcy.

No high-def DVD's? No problem... your standard def DVD's will play just fine if you ever do get a BluRay player (both HD-DVD and BluRay players play standard definition discs just fine). If you don't make the jump to high-def, your $30 Wal-Mart DVD player will play them too. I will warn everyone, though... once you go high-def, you'll never go back! And DVR's (digital video recorders, like Tivo) should be *required* for anyone who watches TV... nothing like hitting the pause button when the phone rings or the kids have a question... Winebrat, yes, sadly you're correct. Those (of us) who bought HD-DVD's will be able to turn them into nice doorstops someday. Fortunately I only have one left in stock... Ebay anyone?

Thanks, at least I am okay in my low-def world. Glad I didn't invest in anything better yet. What kind of TV do you need to play blue-ray DVD's? I'm guessing an HDTV, which I don't have yet either.

Wayne, pretty much any TV will *play* BluRay discs... just depends how you connect it. Of course it wouldn't make sense to connect a BluRay player to a nasty old TV, because the picture would be only as good as the TV can display. Get a BluRay player when you're ready to upgrade to a nice plasma, LCD, projector, etc. (HDTV, obviously). Once they get BluRay production ramped up better, prices will fall even faster than they have been. But for now stick with what you've got...

ORIGINAL: eskinpa And DVR's (digital video recorders, like Tivo) should be *required* for anyone who watches TV... AMEN TO THAT! I can never again be without my TiVo! We even switched from DirecTV to cable when DirecTV dropped TiVo as their DVR. It was cheaper to get the cable and pay for the TiVo than to keep the DirecTV and buy TiVo...
