DLP TV? - Thursday, July 12, 2007 10:16 AM
I went looking at flat panels the other day...Saw PLasma & LCD, both looked kinda grainy.  Then I saw "DLP" and they were gorgeous!  The prices were quite good, too.  Were they that good because it was HD and the others weren't?  What is DLP and is it worth looking into?  Is it a newcomer to the market?  There were all different brands, so I know it wasn't a brand.

Hi Winebrat:

Hard to tell exactly... given the right setup, and the right signal going to the set, all three technologies should give you a gorgeous picture.  If you were at a "big box" store, it's possible that they messed up with their signal distribution... where some TV's got enough signal, others not.

Or maybe they had the DLP set to a high brightness setting, and the Plasma & LCD set lower.  High brightness is a trick some places use to fool people... you would never set it that high at home, but it looks good in the store under the glare of the fluorescent lights.

Inherently, there is nothing better about one of the technologies over the other... they all have their pluses and minuses.  However, like I said, you should be able to get an awesome picture out of any one.

DLP means "Digital Light Processing."  Basically, the manufacturer puts a projector bulb inside the TV, then bounces the light onto a chip called a "Digital Micromirror Device" then through another, bigger, mirror setup then shines it against the back of the screen.  DLP's are cheaper per square inch than either Plasma or LCD, but they're a little thicker.  They can also (if it's a single-chip DLP) give something called "the Rainbow Effect" where you can see colors on the edges of white when the white is against a dark background, like during the credits in a movie.  Some people see them, some don't.

What's the bottom line?  Buy what looks good to you, and fits your needs & budget.  Buy from a reputable dealer... someone with an actual presence, in case you have any problems you have a place to go to for resolution. I'm happy to talk with you more about any of this stuff, just give me a ring if you want... 570-992-2992.
