Dental "Did You Know..." - Tuesday, November 01, 2005 9:28 AM
The first of every month I will post a Dental Did You Know tidbit...Here's the first ...

“Over 25 years of testing in widely different conditions confirm that Xylitol is the best sweetener for teeth. Xylitol use reduces tooth decay rates both in high-risk groups (high caries prevalence, poor nutrition, and poor oral hygiene) and in low risk groups (low caries incidence using all current prevention recommendations). Sugar free chewing gums and candies made with Xylitol as the principal sweetener have already received official endorsements from six national dental associations.”

It can now be found in Trident!!

Did you know: 99% of the calcium in your body is in the bones and teeth
The "Recommended Dietary Intake" (or recently revised "Adequate Intake") For Calcium, regardless of male/female differences, for age 19-50 is 1000mg per day and age 50+ is 1,200mg per day. You body only can "handle" 500 mg of Calcium at a time so any calcium supplement taken in dosages of 500 mg or less with meals may improve absorption.
Some Calcium content of selected foods:
Yogurt, low-fat, w/fruit, 1 cup = 345mg
Milk, skim, 1 cup = 302mg
Milk, 2%, 1 cup = 297mg
Spinach, frozen, cooked, ½ cup = 138mg
Broccoli, cooked from fresh, ½ cup = 36mg
Banana, 1 medium = 7mg

Winebrat:  Is Xylitol currently available in any coffee sweeteners that you know of?  Thanks.

Currently, Xylitol can be found in sweeteners, but I have only seen it for sale online.  Possibly a health food store (Maybe Earthlight?) would carry it.  I do have patients that use it, but they all order it online in bulk.  I Googled many places that carry it, just gotta shop around for price.

It can tend to "give you the runs" if over used, but so will sucralose or most any other sweetener.

Did You Know...Dental floss is an ancient invention.

Researchers have found dental floss and toothpick grooves in the teeth of prehistoric humans. Levi Spear Parmly (1790-1859), a New Orleans dentist is credited as being the inventor of modern dental floss (or maybe the term re-inventor would be more accurate). Parmly promoted teeth flossing with a piece of silk thread in 1815. Johnson and Johnson Company of New Brunswick, New Jersey were the first to patent dental floss in 1898. Dr. Charles C. Bass developed nylon floss as a replacement for silk floss during WW II. Dr. Bass was responsible for making teeth flossing an important part of dental hygiene.

Did You Know...
Valentine’s Day, February 14th…It is widely accepted that all foods containing "fermentable carbohydrate" have the potential to contribute to cavity formation.  Although chocolate contains fermentable carbohydrates, a number of dental research studies suggest that chocolate may be less apt to promote tooth decay than has been traditionally believed.

Did You Know...
The term "indentured servant" has a story behind it. In the colonial days, debtors were shipped from Europe to America to work as servants. Instead of signing a contract, they sealed their agreement by leaving their dental imprint in wax.

Dental Did You Know...
Forgot about this months one!  Oops!

If you want to keep all your teeth as you age, it helps to live in Hawaii and to be a non-smoker, according to a 1999 report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. Only 14% of people 65 or older who live in Hawaii are completely toothless, a condition known as edentulism. In contrast, at least 48% of people of the same age in West Virginia have lost all their teeth, according to the survey of more than 27,000 people in 46 states.
