This answer is going to take some time. Some general information first:
1. Any alloy that contains mercury is called an amalgam
2. amalgam is composed of primarily silver (typically 67-70%) and tin (typically 25-27%)
3. also included is copper (6% more or less) and zinc (may or may not)
4. "The possibility of toxic reactions to the patient from the traces of mercury penetrating the tooth or sensitization from mercury dissolving from the surface of the amalgam is remote. The danger has been evaluated in numerous studies. The patients encounter with mercury vapor is too brief, and the total amount of mercury vapor is too small to be injurious. Furthermore, any mercury leached from the amalgam apparently is excreted by the body and not converted to the lethal forms of methyl or ethyl mercury...dental amalgam restoration remains a safe and effective treatment" Phillips-Moore Elements of Dental Materials Fifth Edition page 188
5. You can see the ADA's stance of various amalgam issues

6.
Here is the CDC's stance.
There is so much information about debunking amalgam fears, hopefully you can find exactly what you are looking for in the above links.
PM me if you have more specific questions and I will repost and answer them here to continue the thread.
